YouTube-No Regular 2012 K of C Free Throw Coverage
It is also this contingent of "Soccer Moms From Hades", who have all the attitude that YouTube is their "Birthright."
Now, I have experience in short films, which these people DO NOT have. My 1st Director, Amanda, is the one who introduced me to something other than YouTube & that service is called Vimeo.com, an outfit based across the street from Chelsea Piers on Manhattan's West Side. Vimeo is a great training ground for being a Rebel Producer, where great & fun films are made & noticed, without all of the Quasi Riff Raff, which tends to populate YouTube. To paraphrase my 5th Grade Teacher in a Catholic School in my old Brooklyn Neighborhood, YouTube is the "Digital Idiot Box." That teacher used the term "Idiot Box", to describe Television.
Mind you, the East Glendale "Video Experts", who rely on the OLD Media, for the information that ONLY YouTube produces big numbers, are part of a "Herd Mentality." After working with Amanda, I realize that she produces programming which does not appeal to the Lowest Common Denominator. So, when the Knights of Columbus 2011 Free Throw Basketball was carried over the web, my policy was(& still is)to carry the competitions over networks other than YouTube.
There is untapped potential for a Free Throw Audience outside of the Realm Of YouTube. Audiences on Vimeo.com, view from much of Europe & The Pacific Rim, as well as North America. Much of the NY Metro Area viewing actually came via the French Service, Dailymotion.com & a number of Canadians were our YouTube & Vimeo viewers. Over half the coverage viewing audience, lives outside of North America, a lot of it in the British Isles & the European Continent. A video sharing social media service in Cork City, County Cork, Republic Of Ireland, called iVideo.ie, now makes up over half of our 4936 viewers, bringing in viewers from Ireland, The UK & France & Germany.
At the 01/15/11 Council Competition, 451 viewers watched the competition on YouTube. But, 378 viewed the competition on blip.tv, 133 viewed the competition on Dailymotion, & 80 viewed on Vimeo, more noted for being a film makers site, hence 942 viewed that 1st Contest. Interesting point here is that YouTube was the plurality of viewers but not the Majority of Viewers. There was evidence at this point where YouTube was & still isn't the only show in town.
With 451 tumbling to 178 viewers, my hypothesis was proved to be right, in that people will watch the contest on other outlets. By the time of the 4th Round, the Long Island Final, 212 tuned in via Vimeo, while YouTube only had 55 viewers. Dailymotion had 120 Viewers & small aggregator VodPod, had 25 Viewers. In iVideo.ie, 606 viewers tuned in, for an overall 1018 viewers of the Long Island Final.
Who said that ONLY YouTube, produces big #s? There are a huge # of Videos on YouTube with only 10 Viewers in 6 months..
YouTube is grossly overrated!
