Yankee Stadium II's Stands Are 65% Gone
35% Of Tier Level Yankee Stadium Remains
The outer shell is illuminated on the inside. A section of Tier along the 1st Base Side & the Right Field Tier Section is all thatt remains of Yankee Stadiium Stands.
Was it really necessary to build a new Yankee Stadium?
Could it be that Steinbrenner was following the lead of NY Mets Ownership?
Yes, George followed what Fred and Jeffy Wilpon wanted to do.
The Wilpons had these plans for Citi Field since 1997. Citi Field was pared down to a total capacity of 41,800, considerably less than Shea Stadium, with an Ebbets Field Exterior but Polo Grounds Outfield Dimensions.
George then decided that he wanted a new playpen, hence a New Yankee Stadium with more luxury seating.
But could something have been done with the existing structure.
Possibly NOt, as the now disappearing Stadium had a beam collapse in it. Also, due to the fact that the previous structure was being tested with crowds which didn't exist in the 1980s and 1990s, it was time for a new, airier stadium.
But remember this-what is being torn down was only in use for 33 Seasons, not 86 Seasons. 1923-2008 was all hype.
