Did These Mergers Have To Occur?
It was the Middle 1960s or Post Vatican II. Nuns began experimenting with "Sensitivity Training", on the Theories of Donald Coulson & Carl Rogers. Both were Psychiatrists(Graduate Medical Doctors).
But, the Nuns, instead of being better Nuns, began fleeing their orders in record numbers. The Orders were no longer enforcing the Rule of Their Orders.
In short, by becoming more Worldly instead of being Other Worldly, Women started fleeing in Record Numbers. The Sister Servants of The Immaculate Heart of Mary, for instance in 1965, had 560 Nuns. By 1968, only 260 Remained & two warring factions fought over properties & financial arrangements. Over 300 Women left the convent in that Order. The Same Thing occurred in other orders in the US.
Many of the remaining Nuns were Radicals. What was left of Nuns pulled out of The Catholic Schools. They tended to anything other than the Catholic Elementary Schools. By the 1970s, very few taught in Catholic Schools. More Lay Teachers took over that role.
Going from "Other Worldly" to "Worldly" cost the Religious Orders Dearly & in effect, precipitated the # of School Closures & Mergers, being seen today.
